Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of Korean dance on metabolic syndrome risk factors, blood inflammatory markers, and senior fitness (dance group, n=23 vs., control group, n=24) in elderly women. The study results show that the waist circumference F=4.701, p=.031), HDLcholesterol level ( F=5.570, p=.045), and systolic blood pressure ( F=4.339, p=.047) as the metabolic syndrome risk factors in the dance group were showed significant interactive effects according to time and the type of group with significant main effects according to the type of group in waist circumference ( F=6.979, p=.016), systolic blood pressure ( F=6.712, p=.015), HDL-cholesterol ( F=7.511, p<.001). Regarding the blood inflammatory markers, the level of C-reactive protein ( F=4.450, p=.045) and the white blood cell count ( F=5.923, p=.017) both showed significant decrease over time in the dance group. In a senior fitness, the muscular strength of the lower body ( F=29.709, p<.001) and of the upper body ( F=23.082, p<.001), the level of muscular endurance ( F=7.724, p=.009), flexibility ( F= 3.955, p=.035), and that of agility ( F=13.552, p<.001) all showed significant interactive effects according the time and the type of group. These results show that a Korean dance program can reduce metabolic syndrome risk by improving fitness levels in elderly women.
